Sunrise in Marrakech shifts by more than two hours across the year, from 05:25 at the earliest to around 07:30 at the latest. The figures below are calculated for Marrakech's coordinates (31.6295, -7.9811) using the NOAA solar position algorithm via the Sunrise-Sunset.org API, for the 15th of each month. Morocco is on permanent GMT (UTC+0) since 20 September 2026, so these times are local clock times.

The booking calendars show the same 5:00 AM start in June and in December, so the listed slot says nothing about when you actually leave the ground.

What the table means for your booking

In midsummer the earliest sunrise of the year lands at 05:25, so a first flight means a pickup long before 5:00 AM. In midwinter the sunrise sits at 07:30 in January and 07:22 in December, two hours later. The listed slot stays the same on the calendar, and the operator sets the real pickup time.

If waking before 5:00 AM does not appeal, the winter months give you a later, gentler start with the same sunrise payoff. Cross-checking against timeanddate.com, Marrakech's sunrise figures match the calculated table once the pre-change GMT+1 offset is added, so the numbers hold up.

The clock change in plain terms

Morocco's Head of Government announced on 25 June 2026 that the country would permanently return to GMT (UTC+0), ending the permanent GMT+1 in force since 2018. This was set out in Decree No. 2.26.530, published in the Official Bulletin on 29 June 2026. Clocks were set back one hour at 2:00 a.m. on 20 September 2026, when 2:00 a.m. became 1:00 a.m.

Morocco no longer moves its clocks at all, including for Ramadan.

What it does to old pickup times

Any pickup time quoted before 20 September 2026, in blog posts, reviews or old confirmation emails, is now one hour off. A blog that said "your driver collects you at 4:30 AM" described the old GMT+1 clock. On today's GMT clock the same real-world moment reads 3:30 AM.

Morocco's sunrise, and with it every balloon launch, happens one hour earlier on the dial than it did before the change. Treat any pickup time in a review or guide written before the change with suspicion, and rely on the confirmation your operator sends the day before rather than a secondhand figure.

How operators actually confirm your pickup

The exact pickup time is rarely printed on the booking. AtlasMontgolfière's own listing warns that the 6:00 AM time shown on the platform is not the real pickup time, and that the exact time is shared the day before by WhatsApp or email. A review on the BallOOning Marrakech listing describes a traveller who paid more for the earliest slot and was still moved to a later flight, while a hotel guest who booked the night before at a lower price got the earlier one.

The platform's own review summaries across at least four Marrakech balloon products repeat the same complaint: travellers want clearer, earlier communication about pickup times and slot order. Build your morning plan around the day-before confirmation, not the platform clock time.

The slot logic operators use

Two separate the platform booking widgets, Marrakech By Air and MarrakeshBallooning, describe the same three-slot structure in their own words. The 5:00 AM slot is generally the first flight of the day and carries the best sunrise odds. The 6:00 AM slot is a priority departure right after the first.

A 7:00 AM slot is scheduled later depending on the morning's conditions. On Marrakech Dream Ballooning's platform listing the itinerary states the 6:00 AM flight runs during sunrise and the 7:00 AM flight runs right after it. That is the honest arithmetic: only the first, and sometimes the second, flight is a sunrise flight.

What a later slot actually means

A 7:00 AM slot leaves after sunrise. Balloons are also wind-driven, so a later launch can mean a warmer basket, harsher light and a different view over the Palmeraie and the Jbilet hills. Some operators sell sunrise as a paid guarantee.

AtlasMontgolfière's listing includes a "Flight With Guaranteed Sunrise" option lasting 3.5 hours as a premium alternative to its base flight, which is explicitly sold with a non-guaranteed sunrise. Sky Expérience Marrakech sells a "1st Flight Guaranteed" slot at 5:30 AM. Where the first-flight premium shows up

The first-flight options sit clearly above the base shared price on the listings. The table below compares the named first-flight or guaranteed-sunrise options found on the listings against each listing's base shared price, with the dollar figures as shown on the booking platforms. How long the whole morning takes

Every operator listing checked quotes the full morning, from pickup to drop-off, at 3 to 5 hours, even though the balloon flight itself is only 40-60 minutes. Ciel d'Afrique's platform itinerary breaks down as a 45-minute transfer to the launch point, a 50-minute flight over the Palmeraie, a 30-minute tea stop at a village and a 45-minute return, roughly 4 hours in total. BallOOning Marrakech lists a 50-minute van transfer, a 40-minute flight, a 1-hour breakfast stop and a 50-minute return.

The temperature table

The figures below are Marrakech's average monthly overnight lows and daytime highs from Climates to Travel. Your flight happens at the low end of each range, in the hour or two around sunrise. December and January are the coldest pre-dawn pickups of the year, with lows near 6-7°C, while July and August nights stay warm at around 21°C. So which months are best?

March to May and October to November combine mild launch-field mornings, lows between 10.4°C and 15.3°C, with comfortable daytime highs for whatever you do afterwards. June is a reasonable compromise if you accept a 5:00 AM alarm for the year's earliest sunrise at 05:25, and a third-party price guide identifies June to September as the off-peak window for availability, which helps with last-minute slots. July and August work but the nights are the warmest of the year and midday heat afterwards is punishing.

December and January give the latest sunrises, 07:22 and 07:30, but you will stand in near-6°C dark waiting for the balloon to inflate.

The wind limits that cancel flights

Hot Air Balloon Marrakech states it does not fly in wind consistently above 15 km/h, nor in rain, snow, fog or with thunderstorms in the area, and that the final go/no-go decision rests with the pilot. Moroccan licensing conditions published with the February 2025 operator authorisations also cap flight altitude at 3,000 feet and require operators to request zone approval at least 30 days ahead and notify local authorities and the Royal Gendarmerie before flying. No operator publishes month-by-month cancellation figures, so no month can honestly be called safe from cancellation.

Every flight depends on wind and can be cancelled on the morning. Hot Air Balloon Marrakech reschedules at no additional cost, and if you cannot reschedule, for example because you leave the next day, it refunds in full. It recommends booking your flight for the first available morning in Marrakech, which leaves a spare morning as insurance.

Ramadan

Hot Air Balloon Marrakech states it flies 12 months of the year, weather conditions permitting, which implies no scheduled closure during Ramadan. Beyond that general statement, no operator site explains how its pickup times shift during Ramadan. The old advice about Morocco reverting to GMT for Ramadan is now obsolete: since 20 September 2026 Morocco is on permanent GMT with no seasonal or religious clock changes.

If you are flying during Ramadan, expect an early start in a city that wakes before dawn to eat, and rely on the day-before confirmation from your operator for the exact pickup.
